As it was expected, today was the much-anticipated release of the new YouTube Kids app that is designed for small children and features only content for kids.
Google describes the new app as being family-friendly and talks about it as being the first Google product that was designed and developed specially for children.
The new YouTube Kids app is available for free download only in the United States from Google Play and Apple’s App Store.
Google advertises its new app as being the only app of its kind to feature content that is appropriate for children.
Google assures the parents that their kids will only watch videos that are appropriate for their age and there is no danger of ever finding any inappropriate content, like they might do when searching on other video streaming websites.
YouTube said that the new app is designed to make a safer online environment for children so that they can find videos of their interest.
Compared to the normal YouTube app, the version for kids is a simpler and more basic application. It features larger images, bold icons and a voice search for the young kids who do not know how to type or spell yet.
However, just like the “normal” YouTube, the kids version features videos, playlists and channels.
The new YouTube Kids app features educational content designed to help the children in their early literacy.
The app has parental control tools that include a timer designed for watch time, so if the parents want to limit the time their kids spend online watching videos, they can set the timer.
Also, the parents have the option of turning off background noise or the search option, thus limiting viewing time to only the videos that have been pre-selected on the home screen.
If the search option is turned off, the only way for kids to find their videos is to browse through the playlists and channels, which come organized in four categories: Music, Shows, Learning and Explore.
Google said that the new YouTube Kids will feature exclusive content from programs like Thomas the Tank Engine, Reading Rainbow, National Geographic Kids, Talking Tom and Friends, Mother Goose Club, Jim Henson TV and DreamWorks TV.
