Officials from 200 countries signed a deal that should reduce the HFC emissions all over the world. An important part of the greenhouses gasses emissions are made because of products we are using every day. The Montreal Protocol will come into effect from January 2019 for developed countries. The nations that were not involved in this meeting will have to sign the protocol in 2024 (China) and 2028 (India).
The Montreal Protocol was signed for the first time in 1987. The countries involved were supposed to eliminate CFCs from industrial processes by 1996. The problem is that most of the CFCs were placed in fridge with HFCs. Even though these substances are not hurting the atmosphere, they are dangerous warming agents. Researchers claim that they are a bigger threat than the carbon dioxide.
In 1996 things were different and people were not of aware of climate change. However, at the moment, HFC emissions are major issues. We are in danger due to global warming and the worst thing is that we are responsible for what happens to our planet.
The world changed a lot and now even less developed countries have a lot of devices that are responsible for HFC emissions. According to the researchers, more than a billion of air-conditioning units will be used all over the world by 2050. Even if the government decided they will not let the global temperature reach plus 2 degrees, we are already in danger. You could think that one degree does not mean so much. When we are talking about global temperature, a degree in enough to put our lives in danger.
At the moment, the Montreal Protocol wants to make countries use alternative options to HFC. According to the U.S. officials, this is the most important thing the world can do if we want to slow down the global warming.
Their plan sounds good, but it will be a long time before we will not be in danger due to HFC emissions. Researchers think that the world needs 30 years before people will not HFCs anymore.
The Montreal Protocol is not the best solution for global warming, but it is the only hope we have. Future generations will have a difficult time while trying to survive if we do not make something to change the situation.
