NASA seems to have some issues due to Hurricane Nicole. The hurricane could hit an important part of the space agency’s infrastructure in Bermuda, so they have to delay some missions. One of them was a cargo supply mission which was supposed to go to the International Space Station.
Cygnus cargo ship had to be launched on Thursday. However, plans have changed and it will be launched on October 16, from Virginia. Unfortunately for NASA, Nicole will reach Bermuda on October 13. Even though it is known as a tropical storm, its speed makes it a hurricane. The space agency officials wanted to be sure that nothing wrong would happen. They were not sure if they will able to launch the spacecraft during the hurricane, so they decided to wait a few more days.
Cygnus is going to carry almost 2 313 kg of cargo. There will be also crew supplies and vehicle hardware for the researchers. It seems that even NASA is forced to wait until the hurricane will be gone. Their mission is too important to fail. Of course, they still do not know how bad the impact will be. Their systems could be affected by Hurricane Nicole.
The space agency officials have in plan to check all the infrastructure after Nicole will pass. They will decide if Cygnus is ready for the experiment. What is more interesting is that the engineers will have only five minutes to send the package into orbit. If something goes wrong or their systems are not working as they should, NASA will not be able to send the equipment.
Nicole is considered to be a Category 4 hurricane. It will sustain winds between 209 and 251 km/h. Moreover, people should expect flooding rain. Even though people from Bermuda are used to big storms, most of them do not touch the islands. The National Hurricane Center said there are only seven hurricanes who had more than 40 nautical miles in that area since 1851.
The authorities from Bermuda are asking people to be prepared for the worst. They had to stay indoors and have supplies. On Thursday morning, Nicole will hit the islands. While the residents are prepared for the hurricane, NASA officials hope their infrastructure will not be destroyed. If there will not be any major issues, they are going to launch the cargo spacecraft by the end of this week.
