People with bigger waistline are more exposed to liver cancer.
Researchers from the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society discovered a connection between the size of the waistline and the risk for liver cancer. According to the study, people with increased waistline are more exposed to liver cancer.
Scientists used data from 1.57 million adults in 12 different U.S. studies. Participants were asked to complete questions about their height, weight, and other factors which are related to liver cancer. None of the individuals suffered from cancer at the beginning of the study. However, over time, 2 162 of them developed liver cancer. The researchers compared the patients who suffered from cancer and were obese with those who developed this disease but had a normal weight. The results showed that for every five cm increase in waistline, the risk increased by eight percent.
This study proves that maintaining a normal body weight has more effects than we could have thought. People thought for a long time that liver cancer is connected only with alcohol intake. It seems that obesity it also one of the main risk factors. Moreover, hepatitis B or C are less common for being responsible for liver cancer.
There are a lot of reasons why people should stay fit. We are not talking here about what the society sees as “beautiful” or “normal”. As long as you are overweight, you are at higher risk of developing chronic diseases. People who stay fit by exercising and eating healthy live longer. Exercising improves our heart condition. It also gives us a better feel of our balance. It was also proved that people who stay fit are more likely to be happy and more confident.
According to the study, if you have an increased waistline you should pay more attention to your health. You are at higher risk of developing liver cancer. In the United States, only 2 percent of the people have this disease. However, in less developed countries, this type of cancer is a bigger threat. Men are more affected by liver cancer than women, at an average age of 67.
The liver is formed of many types of cells. This makes it more exposed to cancer. Even though not all the tumors are cancerous, those who are can spread fast to other parts of the body. Unfortunately, most people discover the disease too late.
