According to a new study, dangerous bacteria can be found in nurses’ scrubs. It seems that the bacteria is spread from the sick patients to the staff and this issue makes the hospital an unsafe place for the patients. Moreover, the patients’ items, such as the beds, are also a spot where bacteria can be found.
Unfortunately, hospital infections are common. One in 25 patients in the United States is affected by this issue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are trying to raise awareness about this problem and focus on infectious diseases.
Researchers from the Duke University Medical Center decided to understand how the bacteria spread. They used data from 167 patients who were in the hospital during the study. The patients received care from 40 nurses, who had 12-hour shifts. According to the researchers, the nurses used a different set of scrubs for every shift.
The results of the study showed there were 22 bacterial transmissions. Six of them were from the patient to nurse, other six were from room to nurse and the other were from the patient to room. It seems that the nurses’ scrubs are the areas most likely to be infected. Moreover, pockets were also a place where bacteria can be found.
Even though the researchers did not find any case of bacteria spread from a nurse to a patient, they said that this happens a lot of times. A virus from one patient can be spread to another by using the nurses’ scrubs.
The biggest issue is that bacteria can be found in the room even if the areas were cleaned. There are some things doctors and nurses can do if they want to prevent infections. They have to wash their hands before and after they went to a patient. Moreover, they should wear gloves when they treat patients with infections. Another advice would be to clean the room as much as you can because bacteria seem to be everywhere.
It is important for a patient to know that he can trust the hospital where he stays. There were cases where people got more ill while they were in the hospital due to infections. We are expecting more research regarding how bacteria is spreading in the hospital and what can we do if we want to prevent the infection.
