FDA specialists discovered that Raritan’s homeopathic products contained belladonna extract.
Raritan Pharmaceuticals issued a voluntary recall of many homeopathic products because they contained a potentially dangerous ingredient. The company is also an important contract manufacturer of these medications for Homeolab USA.
The United States Food and Drug Administration established that the products contained belladonna extract, an ingredient which can be life-threatening to children. The FDA officials said that during the tests, researchers discovered various levels of the extract.
Unfortunately, the affected homeopathic products were distributed in various locations across the country. Customers who may have bought any of these products are urged to look for the CVS Homeopathic Infants Teething Tablet and Ear Relief Liquid as well as the Kids Relief Homeopathic Ear Relief Oral Liquid.
The Raritan officials underline that although the products contain small amounts of belladonna extract, they are still dangerous if they are taken in larger doses. They further added the voluntary recall is mainly a measure of precaution.
No cases have been reported yet, and no other Homeolab or Raritan products have been affected. Consumers are strongly recommended to stop using the recalled products and call their physician in case they experience any symptoms related to the homeopathic tablets.
For additional information and any other questions related to the recall, customers can call at 1-800-FDA-1088. They can also use this number to report any problems related to the recall. CVS issued the recall of the homeopathic teething tablets in early September.
The FDA acted immediately and alerted the public to discard any homeopathic kids’ gels and teething tablets. These types of treatments are widely popular because they are known to treat some mild health conditions using a more natural approach.
The name of the extract comes from Italian, and it means “beautiful lady,” but it can trigger violent symptoms in larger doses. The belladonna extract contains atropine, a powerful alkaloid, which can be deadly if it’s ingested in high concentrations.
More precisely, atropine can be fatal in a 100-mg-dose, but it depends on the herb’s potency. For instance, the manufacturers use between five and fifty grams of belladonna plant to produce 100 mg of atropine. However, smaller doses can block the children’s nervous system leading to death.
