Also known as SAD, seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that occurs when the daylight saving time changes. This happens in November and it can continue all winter if people don’t know how to cope with it.
The seasonal affective disorder occurs because out bodies are influenced by the changes in temperature and daylight. These affect our levels of serotonin and melatonin. These two are related to our mood and our sleep patterns.
Many specialists mention that people are going to be the most affected by this disorder the first week after they switch to daylight saving time. This is considered to be a neurovegetative depression. This means that people who suffer from it have less energy.
Some of the symptoms that can indicate seasonal affective disorder are hypersomnia, low energy, gaining weight, eating more and having cravings for carbohydrates. The most important symptom is the social withdrawal also known as “hibernating”.
People who suffer from this have a tendency to spend a lot of time alone, sleeping and eating. They don’t go out as much as they used to. Of course, there are a lot of things that anybody can do while they have SAD. Doing these things can improve the way that people feel when they have SAD.
First of all, specialists recommend people to do sports, to work out so that they can maintain healthy and happy. They should also take some vitamins so that their body responds better to seasonal affective disorder. Another thing that can help them is to stay connected with their friends.
People who suffer from SAD should withdraw from their groups. They should be connected with others in order to get past this depression. Studies have shown that people who are surrounded by friends and who communicate a lot tend to get past problems easier.
If you start to feel like you have no energy and you tend to eat a lot you should get some vitamins to get back on your feet as soon as possible. The seasonal affective disorder is a real condition and it should be taken seriously. People should listen to their doctor’s advice in order to get past this period without problems.
