Sleeping is a very important matter in a child’s life because it helps him develop normally. Many people don’t believe that children’s sleep is important but studies showed that if a child sleeps better he develops faster.
There are numerous things that affect our sleep and our children’s sleep. Maybe the noise outside, that thing we eat at dinner or the TV, but the one that keeps us awake and damages our sleep is the smartphone. If a child owns a smartphone and it uses it before sleeping this might affect him.
A new study showed that children who had their smartphone or tablet in the same room where they slept had a bad sleep compared to those who didn’t sleep with the tablet in the same room. This happened even if they didn’t use it and worst of all, it happened when it was turned off.
What affects children’s sleep?
The light that is emitted by the phone can interfere with the child’s circadian rhythm which means that he falls asleep harder. This study focused a lot on how a tuned off smartphone affects us and it proved that even if it is turned down it can have a detrimental effect.
“Sleep is an often undervalued but important part of children’s development, with a regular lack of sleep causing a variety of health problems,” said the leader of the study, Ben Carter from King’s College London.
The number of children who own a smartphone is getting bigger and bigger. Now there are 72% of children who have a phone or a tablet. They also use the mobile device right before going to bed which causes them to become agitated and fall asleep harder than they should. Researchers did not really prove how the phone affects us while it is switched off but they believe that is has something to do with the psychological effect that social media has on us.
In order for children’s sleep to improve, parents should remove any device from their children’s room before bedtime. If they do so they will see some great improvements in their children’s sleeping pattern. Also if they take the device before bedtime children will feel rested the next day and they won’t complain about daytime sleepiness.
