One of the greatest contemporary physicists commented recently in regards to one of the major issues humanity needs to deal with as soon as possible. During an interview with Larry King, Stephen Hawking warned about the increased threat to humankind posed by pollution and climate change.
Despite his profession as a theoretical physicist, which involves concepts and discussions that may be hard to understand by unspecialized audiences, Stephen Hawking managed to overcome this barrier and become a major cult figure for nowadays society.
His fame entertains the idea that scientists can breach into the mainstream and become an authority figure for large audiences.
Since his previous interview with Larry King in 2010, during which Hawking warned people about climate change and pollution, global warming and overpopulation have become two of the most important issues humanity needs to confront.
Despite putting global warming on the public agenda for years, very little was done by governments to fight pollution and the effects of greenhouse gas emissions on the environment.
Asked about his opinion on the evolution of certain matters related to the severe effects of global warming, Stephen Hawing said that humanity has not become less stupid, or less greedy since the last time he was on King`s TV show.
His harsh but just critique was backed up with information meant to exemplify the extent to which people can become a threat to themselves.
As per Stephen Hawking, pollution increased with 8 percent in the past six years, and the population of the globe has grown by almost half a billion. The famed physicist drew attention to the fact that the population of the planet will nearly double by 2100.
Moreover, the pointed out that around 80 percent of the urban population is exposed to dangerous levels of pollution.
Apart from global warming, one other hot topic that was debated during the interview was related the growing development of artificially intelligent systems. While technology can prove to be highly beneficial, Stephen Hawking warned about the risks we expose ourselves to unless ethical standards are strictly followed.
This warning draws attention to a potential scenario in which AI turns against humanity. Despite the risks, research should continue, but scientists need to consider options and solutions for each worst case scenario.
